Privacy policy

Zoomingscreen is a Chrome extension for recording and editing screen videos, and this website where you can make an account and buy Pro. It is built so that your recordings stay on your own computer. This policy explains the small amount of information that does leave it, and why.

The short version

Your video, sound, clicks and edits are processed and stored only on your device. We never receive them. If you make an account, we keep your email address and what you need to use Pro. The extension talks to our server only to activate and check a Pro key. We do not use analytics, advertising or tracking of any kind.

What stays on your computer

While you record a browser tab, the extension notes, for that tab only and only while the recording runs:

• where the mouse pointer is, and when you press and release a button,
• the position and size of text you select,
• the position of a text field while you type in it, but never which keys you press or what you type,
• for each press, which mouse button it was, what kind of element it landed on (for example a button, a link or a text field) and where that element sits, but never its text,
• that the page scrolled or changed to another page, that a dialog or menu opened and where, and that you left the tab or came back.

Positions are stored as fractions of the visible page, together with the time they happened. This is what lets Zoomingscreen place zooms and show a ring on each click. It is kept with the recording in your browser's storage on your computer, alongside the video, its sound, any microphone audio you chose to add, background images you upload and your editing choices. Exported videos are saved where you choose.

None of this is sent to us or to anyone else. You can delete any recording from the Zoomingscreen library at any time, and removing the extension deletes all of it.

Your account

You sign in with your email address and a password, or with your Google account. We store your email address, when you joined and last signed in, your plan and its status, and a note of important account events such as purchases, key moves and new keys, so we can help you if something goes wrong. Your browser keeps a sign in cookie. It is needed for the account to work, is not used for anything else, and lasts up to 30 days or until you sign out. We store only a scrambled copy of it, of your password, and of any password reset link. We cannot read your password.

If you sign in with Google, Google tells us your email address, whether Google has confirmed it, and an id for your Google account, and nothing else. We do not see your Google password, contacts or files. You can remove Zoomingscreen from your Google account settings at any time.

What we receive when you use Pro

When you activate your key, the extension sends our server:

• your key,
• a random device identifier created by the extension, which is not linked to your hardware or your Chrome account,
• a device label such as "Chrome on macOS", so you can recognise your computer.

About once a day the extension sends back the signed token it received, to confirm your Pro plan is still active. We store a one way hash of your key (not the key itself), its last five characters, the computer it is locked to, when it was first and last seen, and how many times someone tried the key on a different computer. We use that last number to protect your key, and we email you when it happens.

Like any web server, ours also sees your IP address with each request. We use it only to stop abuse through rate limits, and it is kept only in short lived server logs.

Payments and email

Purchases are handled by Polar, who act as the merchant of record. They collect your payment and billing details under their own privacy policy, and we never see your card. Polar tells us which account paid, the email used, and the order or subscription, so we can give you Pro. We send password reset links, your key and account notices through our email provider, Resend.

Chrome permissions

• Tab capture and offscreen documents to record the tab you choose and keep recording in the background.
• Access to websites so the extension can note pointer positions in the tab you are recording, and pick tracking back up after that tab navigates. On every other tab, and whenever you are not recording, it does nothing.
• Storage and unlimited storage to keep recordings, which can be large, on your computer.
• Scripting and active tab to start tracking in a page that was open before the extension was installed.
• Alarms to schedule the daily key check.

Limited use

The use of information received from Chrome APIs follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We do not sell data, use it for advertising, or let people read it, and we do not transfer it except as described above.

How long we keep data

Account and key records are kept while your account exists and for as long as tax and accounting law requires after that. Password reset links expire after 30 minutes. Server logs are deleted after 30 days.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of the information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account, by writing to privacy@zoomingscreen.com. Deleting your account ends Pro on your computer.

Children

Zoomingscreen is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. If a change affects what leaves your computer, the extension will tell you before it takes effect.
